On Monday, September 28, 2026, Institut Cochin welcomed Jean-Carles Grelier, Member of the French National Assembly for the Sarthe department, for a visit organised with Inserm focusing on a major research and public health issue: women’s health. The visit provided an opportunity to showcase several research projects conducted at the Institute and to discuss current challenges in biomedical research.

Discovering Research at Institut Cochin: Women’s Health at the Heart of the Discussions

Welcomed by Florence Niedergang, Director of Institut Cochin, Jean-Carles Grelier was first introduced to the Institute, its organisation and its main areas of scientific expertise. Learn more about the management of Institut Cochin

The visit continued with Molly Ingersoll, head of the Mucosal Inflammation and Immunity team. Her research focuses in particular on bladder mucosal immunity, urinary tract infections, and sex differences in immune responses and susceptibility to disease. Cutting-edge technologies supporting research

Jean-Carles Grelier also visited two of Institut Cochin’s technological core facilities: PROTEOM’IC, dedicated to proteomic analyses using mass spectrometry, and IMAG’IC, a cellular imaging facility offering, among other technologies, high-resolution light microscopy. Discover the PROTEOM’IC core facility Discover the IMAG’IC core facility

This part of the visit also provided an opportunity to meet Julie Helft, Research Director and head of the Phagocytes and Cancer Immunology team, and to discuss the team’s research on cancer immunology and the tumour microenvironment. Discover the “Phagocytes and Cancer Immunology” team

Reproduction, pregnancy and metabolic health

The visit then highlighted the research conducted by Daniel Vaiman’s team, From Gametes to Birth: Genomics, Epigenetics and Pathophysiology of Reproduction. The team investigates disorders of human reproductive function, ranging from infertility to pregnancy-related conditions, including preeclampsia and abnormalities in the duration of pregnancy. Discover the “From Gametes to Birth” team

Catherine Postic, Deputy Scientific Director of Institut Cochin and co-head of the Glucose Sensing, Insulin Signaling and Glucotoxicity team, presented research on metabolism and metabolic diseases, as well as the importance of sex differences in these conditions. Discover Catherine Postic and her research

Strengthening dialogue between research and public decision-making

Beyond the presentation of the scientific projects, the visit provided an opportunity to discuss several major challenges facing public research, including research funding and the resources needed to strengthen the continuum between basic research, translational research and patient care.

The visit also highlighted the importance of dialogue between scientists and public decision-makers, both to raise awareness of advances in biomedical research and to better understand the needs of the teams driving scientific progress every day.

Institut Cochin thanks Jean-Carles Grelier and his Special Adviser Anne de Danne for their visit and the quality of the discussions, as well as Inserm and all the researchers, engineers, core facility staff and Institut Cochin teams who contributed to this event.
