Seminar abstract

HIV-1 tightly controls the conformations sampled by its envelope glycoproteins (Env) to evade host immune responses. Recent advances have shed new light on this mechanism and revealed new opportunities to target the virus. This presentation will discuss strategies to modulate HIV-1 Env conformation, expose vulnerable epitopes, and sensitize viral reservoir cells to immune-mediated clearance.

Andrés Finzi is full Professor at Université de Montréal and researcher at the Centre de Recherche du CHUM (CRCHUM) where he leads the Immunopathology research theme. Dr Finzi is a leader in envelope glycoprotein conformational changes, accessory proteins and Fc-mediated effector functions.  He made major contributions to the field of HIV/AIDS and SARS-CoV-2 research. His work has important implications for the development of new therapeutic strategies to fight HIV-1 and SARS-CoV-2.
His work earned him several prestigious awards, including the Young Faculty Award bestowed by the NIH Center for HIV/AIDS Vaccine and Immunogen Design (CHAVI-ID, 2016), the Joe Doupe Young Investigator Award (Canadian Society for Clinical Investigation, 2019), the André Dupont Young Investigator Award (Club de recherches cliniques du Québec, 2020), Étoile Effervescence by Montréal INVIVO (2022), the research Excellence Award by the Canadian Society for Virology (2026). The quality and impact of his research was recognized by his admission to the College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists of the Royal Society of Canada in 2020.
